Frontier's West Va. middle mile project nearly complete - Fierce Telecom

Frontier Communications (Nasdaq: FTR) is close to completing its middle mile broadband stimulus project in West Virginia, one that will provide services to various anchor institutions throughout the state.
Although the project was funded with a $126.3 million broadband grant, a Saturday Gazette Mail article citing a West Virginia state report said that over $43.3 million remains unspent. To date, the telco has installed 583 miles of fiber cable to schools, libraries and other state and local government facilities, leaving only seven more miles to build out.
In addition, Frontier has nearly completed 79 miles of an 85-mile middle mile project to provide a fiber connection between West Virginia University and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank in Pocahontas County.
According to the state's report, Frontier is set to get about $45 million for the two projects, but as of Friday it only received $9.6 million.
"The Office of Technology is in the process of working with the grant implementation team to ensure accuracy and documentation of all invoices and payments," said Diane Holley-Brown, a spokeswoman told the Saturday Gazette Mail.
Frontier is using the stimulus funds to provide fiber-based services to 630 "community anchor institutions," which includes a mix of schools, libraries, jails, 911 centers, health clinics, county courthouses, planning agencies and other state & local government facilities. The telco, according to the report, still needs to complete the installation to the final 15 sites.
Aside from the middle mile projects, Frontier, which became West Va.'s largest service provider when it purchased Verizon's wireline facilities in 14 rural markets, recently received the state senate's backing for its proposal to target broadband rollouts in unserved areas of the state.

Sprint targets enterprises with MPLS, managed cloud bundle - Fierce Telecom

Sprint (NYSE: S) has begun offering its large business customers a new bundled service package that includes managed networking, MPLS transport, and CPE that it says will provide greater simplicity and better visibility into their networks.
"Businesses benefit from Sprint's customized approach to managing customer networks, simplified pricing and a single account team that understands converged, cloud and mobility solutions," said Mike Fitz, vice president of wireline, Sprint, in a release.
The new Managed Network Solutions portfolio spans multiple areas, including network design, performance management, CPE monitoring, SLAs and a single point of customer contact.
In addition, businesses will have 24x7 access to CPE performance via Compass, Sprint's online tool which offers real-time views into the health of their WAN and the ability to troubleshoot problems. Complementing Compass, businesses that use Managed Network Solutions can view their entire network through the cloud, giving them visibility beyond the Sprint edge router to customers' edge routers.
Although Sprint has become more focused on its wireless network services since spinning off its local telephone division Embarq, now CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL), in 2005, it has in recent years built up a sizeable wireline business for larger enterprises served by its growing global MPLS network.
Last year, it increased its investment in its wireline business by 53 percent with a particular focus on its MPLS network and Ethernet by establishing E-NNI (external-network to network interconnection) agreements with other carrier partners. Earlier this week, Sprint established a new point of presence with Interxion, a carrier-neutral colocation data center provider in Madrid, as part of its ongoing international expansion.
Its efforts are bearing fruit as the Gartner Group upgraded Sprint's status on its Magic Quadrant for Global Network Service Providers from niche player to challenger.

Mobile money to transform Turkish transport and US retail - telecoms.com

Turkcell and Gemalto have each found themselves at the hearts of two mobile payment projects in Turkey and the USA respectively
Turkish operator Turkcell and SIM card and mobile security solutions provider Gemalto have each found themselves at the hearts of two mobile payment projects that promise to transform the transport and retail sectors in Turkey and the USA respectively.
Turkey’s Turkcell has integrated the country’s public transport card Urfakart into its mobile wallet solution. As a result, customers using Turkcell Wallet are able to make contactless payments for transport services in the Sanliurfa province using their mobile phones. In addition, they can check and top up their Urfakart balances without having to go to a payment point.
The operator has been somewhat of a pioneer in the mobile payments space. It launched its wallet solution in October last year, which works on both smartphones and feature phones, and supports contactless payments on NFC-enabled phones. It has also struck deals with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) to sell match tickets to fans via their mobiles across the country, and with local bank Akbank to introduce an NFC-based mobile wallet service incorporating location-based elements.
“We, as Turkcell, are leading the way in terms of mobile communication technologies that are not only reshaping the world but also changing the way of doing business in sectors such as transportation, finance, education and health,” said Turkcell general manager Sureyya Ciliv.
“Turkcell Wallet, which we introduced in October of 2012 as the world’s most advanced mobile wallet solution, is currently on the mobile phones of 1.2 million people. The Turkcell Wallet public transportation system is a first in Turkey and we hope that the 207 public transportation vehicles in Sanliurfa will set an example for other provinces to follow in the near future.”
Over in the US, the Merchant Customer Exchange – a body representing a group of retailers with the aim of setting up a standardised mobile commerce platform across the sector – has selected Gemalto to build its mobile wallet.
The MCX cited Gemalto’s expertise in mobile financial services and its track record of working with banks, governments, merchants and mobile operators as its reasons for selecting the firm.
The MCX wallet will be primarily barcode and cloud-based, the body said, and will run on Gemalto’s Allynis Mobile Payment platform.
Once deployed, the wallet will be accepted at all MCX members, a group of 35 retail firms including the likes of Walmart, Target, Sears, Gap and Shell. The merchants collectively operate more than 75,000 stores and process more than $1tn in payments annually, according to the MCX.
“Our work with [Gemalto] over the past months leaves little doubt that MCX will benefit from their considerable technical expertise,” said MCX senior executive Dodd Roberts.
“The calibre and scale of the merchant organizations behind MCX creates opportunity to elevate mobile payments,” Jack Jania, SVP at Gemalto added.
